Taking care of each other and helping your spouse to take care of themselves is a great way to increase intimacy and closeness in your marriage. As a bonus, you get healthier, too.

We started taking our fitness a little more seriously a few years ago and we wanted to integrate time together into our fitness routine. We were killing two birds with one stone and enjoying our workout time much more in the process. Here are some ideas for couples
to spend time together getting healthier- both physically and in their relationship.

1. Take a fitness vacation.

Starting a new fitness routine is usually the hardest step and a lot of people find it easier to take that step somewhere else. Fitness vacations can be a great getaway as  well as a great motivator. There are fitness vacations to suit most budgets and they can be for a weekend or a week. Huffington Post has a great post on some of the best fitness vacations around.

2. Walk the Talk.

We walk together for half an hour every evening. We enjoy walking as a fitness activity and we know that walking is one of the safest and most effective exercises you can do. For us, though, the time spent talking to each other is equally valuable. Couples today are busy. Instead of trying to find time to exercise and really talk to your spouse, how about combining the two?

3. Take lessons together.

Sometimes we don’t work out because we’re bored with the idea of running on the treadmill or lifting weights at the gym. Sometimes we’re also scrambling for fun new things to do together as a couple. Once again, you can achieve two things at once: take some lessons
in ballroom dancing, tennis or anything else physical that sounds fun. It’s almost like dating and working out at the same time!

4. Join a team.

Community centers, employers and neighborhoods are always looking for adults to join their sports teams. Sign up for softball, basketball, soccer or even flag football together. Just make sure you both want to do it. If one of you feels out of place or even hates the activity, it won’t do you any good.

Getting our bodies fit is not only important for our own health, it’s important for our marriages. Your spouse deserves to have you fit and healthy for a nice long time. So find something fun to do together that gets you moving!
